Finding Flow: Decompress to Protect Your Performance
We've been building the Finding Flow series around optimising your mornings, leaning into resources like the Miracle Morning, Eating That Frog with your Most Important Tasks (MITs), and protecting that sacred Golden Hour. But here's a truth many underestimate: optimised performance and real flow does’t just start in the morning—they begin the day before.
This week's piece is all about decompressing.
The Stress Bucket We All Carry
Imagine your mind and body as a stress bucket. As we move through life—from childhood into adulthood—it fills up with daily pressures, big events, and everything in between. If we don't actively manage it, that bucket overflows. The result? Overwhelm, low mood, anxiety, highly emotional reactions, or worse.
We all know the unhealthy outlets (addictive behaviors, numbing out). The better path is installing healthy "taps"—deliberate habits that drain pressure before it builds up.
My Personal Decompression Practices
At the start of the day, journaling and yoga/exercise help me reset. But the game-changer for me, especially after transitioning from corporate life to working from home, is the end-of-day ritual.
I make time for a solid hour's walk in nature every evening after work and before dinner. It creates a clear boundary between work and personal time. Nature does something extraordinary—it resets me completely.
I’m also intentional about evening stimulation: certain films and music stay off the list, lighting is managed, and I follow a gentle wind-down process. These small choices protect my recovery and set up the next day’s success.
Why This Matters for Finding Flow
Decompression isn't a nice-to-have—it's foundational. When your stress bucket is managed, you show up clearer, more focused, and ready to tackle your MITs. You build sustainable momentum instead of burning out.
Your task: Reflect on your own healthy taps. What habits genuinely reduce your stress and boost well-being? Build them into your routine, especially at day's end.
I'd love to hear your decompression strategies below. What works for you?
Best of luck out there—protect your energy, find your flow.
Take care
